The Veilstone Valley was once the crown jewel of the California gold rush. Ore flowed east by the ton, fortunes were made overnight, and the Evening Star Mine promised riches beyond measure. But greed cut too deep. One day, out of the blue, came Calamity. A skull-piercing sound, like the seven trumpets of Revelation, split the sky. The ground shook, and an inky darkness cloaked the valley. When the sun returned, it did so meekly, as if the valley itself did not welcome its light. That is when the monoliths appeared across the valley, as if they had stood there for eons. The Evening Star Mine was abandoned, and J.B. Whaitley was never seen again.

Since that day the valley has been cursed. Fog settles thick on the trails, things not born of this world prowl the hills, and the dead do not rest. Cultists and outlaws carry strange banners, miners whisper of voices down in the shafts, and some swear that Lucifer himself rides these roads, trading gold for souls. The ore that remains, veilstone, an inky black crystal lighter than it should be, is prized by the greedy and desperate, but brings only ruin to those who seek it.

Veilstone is a Gothic Western setting for Shadowdark where life and death bleed together on the haunted frontier. Players step into the boots of gunfighters, scouts, doctors, and spirit guides to carve out their fate in a valley where every shadow might pull you across the threshold into the Veil, the plane of the dead.

Veilstone is a grim and gritty setting. There is gold and more for the taking if one can survive the horror lurking in every shadow. There is no whimsical steampunk gadgetry. Firearms are powerful but slow to reload. The Veil has made ancient magics function, and it is needed as ancient horrors have returned as well.
